Neatly coinciding with the announcement by the government of Ultra Low Emission Bus (ULEB) funding, Yutong’s debut 10.8m electric bus has started trials in London, working from Croydon with Arriva.

Its arrival in the capital follows a series of tests at Millbrook, where it achieved ULEB certification – needed for vehicles that will be part-funded by the grant aid scheme.

With the shorter, two-door London-spec version of Yutong’s 12m electric bus, dealership Pelican aims to win sales in the growing UK electric bus market.

Speaking to routeone, Ian Downie, Head of Yutong Bus UK at Pelican says: “We are delighted to hear of the Government’s announcement for the Ultra Low Emission Bus scheme, which will provide funding for zero and ultra low emission vehicles.

“This initiative will be an excellent contributor to the early market adoption of zero-emission vehicles which will form part of the solution to solve pollution on the streets of the UK.

“Yutong are proud to offer fully zero-emission buses, with electric driven air-conditioning for heating and cooling for passenger comfort.

“Our heritage in producing over 58,000 zero-emission vehicles over the past 19 years has culminated in our UK offering of both 10.8 metre and 12 metre single deck buses, and with other products in development.

“Our demonstration vehicle has seen service in Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, York and London with no in-service failures, and with an excellent daily range achieved.

“The convenience of DC fast overnight charging within the garages has ensured its uninterrupted operation in daily service.

“Driver and customer feedback has been very positive, specifically with comments regarding its smooth acceleration and deceleration, and low noise levels both inside and outside the vehicle.

“We look forward to discussing our ULEB certified vehicles with both operators and local authorities as we are convinced that Yutong will positively contribute to the solution of our current environmental issues.”
