Dechoker is a hand-held device that can be used to remove an obstruction from the throat of someone who is choking.
It is suitable for use by any first aider (including drivers) and does not require batteries or charging. It is intended for use when the normal protocols – abdominal thrusts and back slaps – have failed to move the obstruction.
When a person’s airway is obstructed, they will likely fall unconscious within five minutes and become brain dead five minutes after that.
Only a paramedic can use secondary equipment such as forceps to try to remove an obstruction, and Dechoker’s manufacturer points out that when on the road, it is not always possible for a minicoach or minibus driver to summon help within that timeframe.
There were over 300 choking deaths in the UK in 2016, with more than 75% of them being people over 60 years of age. A Dechoker designed specifically for children is also available.
