Melissa Millington has become the first female apprentice in two decades to start on Go North East’s coach and bus mechanical and electrical engineering apprenticeship.

The 19-year-old, from Chester-le-Street, was hand-picked from more than 500 applicants to join six new recruits in the bus operator’s most recent apprentice intake. She will undertake training and development alongside Go North East’s engineering team at its Chester-le-Street depot as part of the operator’s bespoke apprenticeship programme run in partnership with Gateshead College.

“I’m proud to be a female apprentice at Go North East and hope others will be inspired to apply in future,” she says.

Go North East has appointed 16-year-old Lindan Middleton, from Sunderland, as apprentice stores keeper. This is the first time in 20 years that it has recruited to this specialist position.

“I am really enjoying the apprenticeship and being hands-on at Go North East,” he says.
