All-new nine-litre unit has been designed specifically for Euro 6d limits; displaces D20 from RR8 chassis

The all-new nine-litre MAN D15 engine will soon make its debut in an RR8 chassis with a MOBIpeople Explorer body.

BASE Coach Sales supplies MOBIpeople coaches. It says that the D15 will displace the outgoing 10.4-litre D20 from the RR8-based Explorer range. The smaller, 6.9-litre D08 will remain part of the line-up, and the first such Euro 6d examples arrived recently.

Director Mark Aspinall adds that subject to the weight imposed on the rear axle, it may be possible to offer a 74-seat capacity with a D15-equipped RR8. Currently, with an MAN chassis that maximum can be achieved only with the D08 rated at 290bhp.

The D15 was unveiled by MAN in 2018 and it forms the backbone of its bus engine range in left-hand drive markets.

It is a claimed 230kg lighter than the D20 and is available with ratings of up to 360bhp. It does not use exhaust gas recirculation to achieve Euro 6d standards. Instead, only selective catalytic reduction utilising AdBlue is required.

The D15 was developed from scratch by MAN for Euro 6d. It has a revised thermal management strategy to satisfy more stringent in-service emissions monitoring, which for the first time will take place during warm-up and at low engine loads, as well as at higher loadings.

Maximum torque is delivered from no higher than 900rpm and MAN says that the new engine will deliver excellent fuel economy.
