Oxford Bus Company and Thames Travel are furthering calls for a shift to bus travel on World Car Free Day, taking place on 22 September.
To highlight the global initiative, which encourages mass transit, cycling and walking as alternatives to private car use, the operators are taking part in a social media campaign and offering 30% discounts off the cost of 12 trip tickets purchased through their apps or websites.
The action supports Oxford Bus Company’s existing Back to Bus campaign, designed to encourage shift towards public transport.
“World Car Free Day… is an excellent initiative that highlights the environmental impact of private car trips and promotes more sustainable modes of transport,” says Oxford Bus Company and Thames Travel Managing Director Phil Southall. “We would encourage people to take part and use it as an opportunity to see what buses have to offer.”
Oxford Bus Company sister Carousel Buses recently launched a carbon dioxide savings calculator, which shows passengers the impact they are having on the environment. Phil says taking the bus from Abingdon to Oxford saves 1,840g of carbon dioxide versus driving – the equivalent of making 780 cups of tea.
Adds Phil: “We have invested millions in ultra-clean technology which has helped to radically reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Oxford. Those who travel with us can use our app to buy tickets, plan journeys and track buses in real time.”
