Stagecoach East is celebrating the second year since its first electric vehicles in Cambridge hit the road.
The buses, a pair of ADL BYD Enviro400EVs, entered service on the 6 route between Cambridge and Oakington in 2020. Since then they have travelled 106,321 miles and saved some 74 tonnes of CO2.
Their delivery was made possible via a joint initiative from Stagecoach East and the Greater Cambridge Partnership.
The operator says the milestone is a significant marker in the operator’s journey to making public transport environmentally friendlier.
Says Darren Roe, Managing Director at Stagecoach East: “The electric buses in Cambridge have proved to be hugely successful over the past two years and we are now looking at the best options for the next steps.
“Over a third of our fleet now use greener engines and ultra low-emission buses which have 30% less well-to-wheel CO2 than the standard Euro VI bus.”
Cllr Elisa Meschini, Chair of the Greater Cambridgeshire Partnerships’ (GCP’s) Executive Board, adds: “The GCP is currently developing bold plans to truly transform the bus network that would make buses an even more attractive and green travel choice to keep people moving while cutting congestion and improving air quality at a time when actions to reduce our collective effect on the climate are at the forefront of people’s minds.”
