Coach operators and drivers visiting Torbay have been warned of major roadworks and road closures at the same time that the area sees a strong return of group travel.
The A3022 Torbay Road, which is the seafront route between Torquay and Paignton, is closed until 8 March while a railway bridge is replaced by Wheatridge Lane. Meanwhile, a stretch of the A379 Torwood Street adjacent to Torquay Harbour has been closed while the road surface is replaced. That work should be completed by the end of March.
Diversions are in place at both locations but Alan Payling, who produces Torbay’s Coach Drivers Information Pack, has warned that they could prove difficult for coach traffic. Mr Payling says that 28 coach parties have visited the resort for five-day holidays recently and that many more arrivals are planned.
He has thus advised drivers to avoid both areas where closures are in force, noting that some of the diversionary routes are via roads that may not be suitable for large vehicles. Mr Payling adds that parties that are staying in other locations near to Torquay should also avoid heading through the town centre and that all coach traffic should instead use the A380 trunk road.
