Long live innovation in the UK

The pace of change, driven largely by technology, is running ever faster. Passengers are voting with their fingers – whether it’s the growth of apps and m-ticketing – or crowd-sourced day trips through services such as VaMooz and Zeelo.

There is no doubt that the hardware – mobile phones, tablets and laptops – is enabling access to software in an easy way that the general public wants.

It is also enabling operators to provide products that were never before possible – or at least in that way – yet we still have a long way to go and much more to deliver.

There is much talk about demand-responsive services and how they could service rural and non-commercial routes. At the moment the main players are focussing on urban areas. But, have no doubt, as the cost of providing services falls thanks to technology, that door will gently open.

Behind all of this are people. Whether its those who are involved in designing apps and the like, or – and arguably most importantly – physically delivering coach and bus services. None of this happens without amazing people.

This industry has some of the best and brightest people in transport. Due to its unique nature with relatively (compared with rail and air) light regulation it means that those who want to make a positive impact can do so – and quickly.

If you have someone in your business who should be recognised for their excellence, or you know of a business that is delivering excellence, then the routeone Awards judges would like to know.

Nominating is very simple and takes just a few moments on the website www.routeoneawards.com. Nominations close next week. So take action now, and nominate who you think should be considered.
