Ambition to double passenger journeys and introduce green fleet is endorsed by operators

Leeds City Council – working with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, partners and stakeholders including all operators in the city – has set out its Connecting Leeds transport strategy.

At the heart of the vision to “deliver a transformational step-change in the transport network and connectivity” is the city’s target to double the current 250,000 bus trips in the city per day, within 10 years.

A key element of the strategy is widespread bus priority.

Launching the city’s bus priority consultation, endorsed by all major operators, First confirmed its commitment to invest £71m in 284 new ultra-low emission buses for the city by 2020.

It showed the first of 34 new Euro 6 Wrightbus StreetDecks for the Headingley corridor (routes 1 and 6), all of which will be in service by the end of March.

With a striking new two-tone green livery and LeedsCity branding, they have enhanced interiors including next stop audio announcements, USB ports and free wi-fi.

Says First Leeds Commercial Director Martin Hirst: “Our aim with a new livery is to help customers identify them, as they will all serve the high frequency Headingley bus services and are ultimately, the best vehicles that we have available, right now.”
