Portsmouth City Council has partnered with Bauer Media Outdoor UK to launch the installation of 27 “Super Stops” and an upgrade of existing bus stops across the city.
The roll-out of the new infrastructure, which will include the latest technology and sustainability initiatives, will begin this month.
Free wi-fi and interactive screens, defibrillators, e-bike docking points, and “living roofs” are among the elements of the 27 new stops produced by Bauer Media Outdoor.
Six new shelters will be installed later this month on Commercial Road and Edinburgh Road. More will follow over the remainder of this year and into spring 2026.
Funded by the city’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) allocation, the plan is aimed at making public transport more appealing and sustainable.
The advanced bus stops in Portsmouth will also include smart lighting, ergonomically designed seating and real-time information screens.
Additional displays will allow for digital navigation and travel planning, while the public will also be able to hire Voi bikes straight off the bus.
The roofs will have plant life and, in some cases, solar panels – similar to those already installed in Leicester.
“Portsmouth’s transport transformation is well under way,” says Councillor Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport.
“Our Super Stops set a new standard for bus travel – accessible, connected, and smart. We’re proud to be working with Bauer Media Outdoor to bring this vision to life.”
Bauer Media Outdoor – formerly Clear Channel UK – will also refresh existing bus shelters to potentially extend their lifespan by 10 years as part of the city’s “Revive” programme.
The upgrades will include removing and replacing some shelters, installing Living Roofs where feasible and installing smart, energy-efficient lighting.
“We believe that public infrastructure can and should do more,” says Neil Chapman, Product Design Director, UK and Europe at Bauer Media Outdoor.
“After listening to bus passengers, we have incorporated a range of features designed to deliver meaningful improvements to their everyday travel experience.
“Alongside our Revive programme, we’re not just upgrading the passenger experience; we’re also extending the life of existing shelters responsibly.
“Our collaboration aims to create a transport network that Portsmouth can rely on and enjoy for years to come.”
