The Go-Ahead Group plans to recruit 600 apprentice bus drivers this year in London and the North West.

Go-Ahead London will take in 500 of the trainee drivers at its Camberwell Academy, while Go-Ahead North West will welcome 100.

An additional 30 Go-Ahead trainees will start work across its regional bus companies and in head office positions in London and Newcastle.

Most of the apprentice drivers will be on the road driving within six weeks, says the operator.

With this year’s intake, the number of apprentices hired by Go-Ahead since 2019 will reach 6,000. The apprentices have ranged in age from 16 to 65.

The 630 planned apprentices for the bus sector are included in a total of 850 announced today by Go-Ahead, also comprising 220 for its rail services.

They will learn functional skills, including English and maths, while working at the operator’s depots, stations, and offices.

Go-Ahead ranked fifth on the UK’s Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer list for 2023.

Carolyn Ferguson, Go-Ahead Group’s Chief People Officer, says: “Our successful apprenticeship program and apprentices across the Go-Ahead Group play a vital role in shaping the future of the business and the broader transport industry.

“What they bring to the Go-Ahead Group is invaluable to our business and the transport sector, and we will continue to invest in talent and diversity.”
