The Guild of British Coach Operators has marked its 40th anniversary across 2025, noting how in addition to celebration, the year has given an opportunity to look to the future and the challenges for coaching that are expected over the next four decades.
Membership of the Guild stands at 26 coach operators. Although Administrator Steve Whiteway (pictured below, front row, left with Chairman Max Fletcher) notes how that represents a small percentage of UK coach businesses, they collectively account for a significant part of the overall market for new coaches, at up to 20% of registrations.
The Guild was founded in April 1985 by Simon Newman of London-based Armchair Coaches, a longstanding campaigner for the industry’s interests, and Don Swinard of Ashford operator Swinards Travel, which was later purchased by Westbus.
Their mutual aim was to bring together coach operators that observe the highest standards; share best practice; and provide mutual aid. Mr Whiteway notes how those still reflect the core of the Guild’s approach 40 years later.
“What Simon and Don started all those years ago has blossomed and still holds dear the founders’ charter to develop best practice and our people to be the best in our industry,” he adds. “The Guild continues to thrive in an ever-changing environment, evidence of the unique mutual support that members enjoy.”

To ensure quality, a demanding biennial independent audit is required. Prescribed financial performance is also mandated.
Membership of the Guild complements the wider-reaching trade bodies that represent the coach industry “as it provides a different and more personal support network for members and their staff,” a statement notes.
That extends not only to principles, but operations, training and engineering, for which separate annual forums are held.
Members meet three times per year with the aim of ensuring that those attending come away with inspiration and new ideas to apply within the operations.
Guild members have won multiple awards, with two – Belle Vue (Manchester) and Johnsons Coaches – recently among victors at the 2025 routeone Awards.
An annual ‘think tank’ event provides the coach industry’s only consistent, year-by-year benchmark of key operational, marketing and financial data, with those details available exclusively to Guild members.
Exploration of what the coming 40 years could hold for coaching has been presented by younger members. They have showcased what the Guild says will be “radical changes ahead but with an exciting future for those who adapt to the new world.”
