Motorway service areas should treat drivers better

We have been informed by a few of our drivers that Welcome Break has withdrawn Subway from their coach drivers’ voucher scheme.

Subway offered them a range of affordable healthy sandwiches, whereas outlets such as Burger King only offer food that’s high in saturated fat and calories. Starbucks does not do much in to the way of ‘normal’ healthy food as they lean towards cosmopolitan type foods, which are typically very expensive and so just a panini and a drink is usually in excess of the value of the voucher.

We appreciate that any inclusions or exclusions to the drivers’ voucher scheme is a commercial decision, but it is wrong to assume that every coach driver wants burger and chips.

Our drivers could use other services, but this could mean either stopping sooner or later on the journey – making it a longer stint for those passengers who board the coach first/are dropped off last. When the comfort of our passengers is paramount, this is not an option.

Receiving free refreshments should not be taken for granted, but when coach drivers are bringing in so much custom to these service areas, it’s a great shame that they aren’t looked after better.
