A former bus driver has launched an online training tool which allows drivers to build up awareness of potential hazards on their routes via a remote device such as a laptop or mobile phone.
The system’s creator, Mark Walker, says NeXstop, which uses GPS technology and camera footage, is already being piloted by a major bus operator in the South East of England.
It is billed as safe and cost-effective way for both new and experienced drivers to learn their routes.
Potential hazards are flagged on the video and a running commentary is provided by profession voice-over artists.
The offering is made on a subscription basis with no capital outlay needed. The team behind it says is it ready to be rolled out throughout the country.
Mr Walker, who was a radio presenter before fulfilling a life’s ambition to become a bus driver at the age of 50, says he is using his 10 years of experience in that second career to give operators a useful training tool.
He says: “The NeXstop route knowledge tool is a totally effective training system, using real footage of every route on a company’s bus network, recorded in real-time and presented with an expert narrative covering all the issues a driver is likely to encounter on a typical day.
“If I’d had this information in my pocket when I was learning to become a bus driver, it would have made life so much easier. However, NeXstop also benefits the experienced driver too, as the system can be dynamically updated to take into account any long-term diversions and route alterations.
“My team plans, manages and efficiently delivers a complete bus network training guide, using our own modified buses with on board recording equipment and highly trained producers. We’re confident NeXstop is the most comprehensive training solution available on the market today.”
