Operator acts due to counterfeit £5 note surge

North Norfolk operator Sanders Coaches has said it has stopped accepting £5 notes on its bus services until further notice due to an influx of counterfeits.

Sanders, which is based in Holt, announced on Monday that it had received 26 forged £5 notes since Friday, mainly in the North Walsham, Cromer and Sheringham area.

The operator writes on its Facebook page: “To protect our drivers, our revenue and to prevent us handing you a fake one back as change, we have taken the decision to refuse any further £5 notes until further notice. We are working with Norfolk Constabulary on the matter.

“You are welcome to pay with other cash or use contactless card, but we ask you co-operate with us on this matter. Please also do not be offended if our drivers check any other cash you present to them, this is an instruction from the company to be extra vigilant.”

The family-owned business, which was established in 1975, runs several services from Norwich, as well as many along the North Norfolk coast between Great Yarmouth and Wells-next-the-Sea and into the inland centres.
