Zemo Partnership has launched RFAS Fleet, which allows fleet operators – including those in coach and bus – to provide clients and customers with independently verified evidence of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions savings via the use of renewable fuel sources.
RFAS Fleet sits alongside Zemo’s Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme (RFAS), which has accredited 54 fuel suppliers in the UK and abroad.
Among the fuels that form part of RFAS Fleet are biodiesel and associated blends, HVO, and renewable hydrogen. Zemo plans to expand it to include renewable electricity in what technical notes around the scheme say will be “the next iteration of RFAS Fleet.”
To be part of RFAS Fleet, operators will be required to source renewable fuels from one or more of the 54 accredited suppliers.
Participants will then apply to Zemo Partnership to become approved under RFAS Fleet and undergo an independent audit to verify compliance. Continuous compliance monitoring including an annual audit is requested after membership has been confirmed.
Once RFAS Fleet operators are approved, they can issue clients and customers with a Fleet GHG Emission Declaration for renewable fuel used on their journeys. Those will identify the types and volumes of renewable fuel consumed and the GHG emissions and savings, as well as details of the raw material feedstocks.
Zemo notes that provision of such independently verified evidence of GHG reductions “can help businesses to attract environmentally conscious customers and win new contracts.”
RFAS Fleet covers both direct fuel use and what is termed “virtual allocation” through a strong chain of custody system. Further details of those approaches can be found in the technical guidance notes.
Says Director of Sustainable Business Gloria Esposito: “RFAS Fleet is a gamechanger for fleet operators and their customers.
“It gives companies a credible, standardised way to report Scope 3 transport emissions reductions and demonstrate the traceability of low-carbon fuel, something that is increasingly required by ESG frameworks and procurement contracts.”
