Proposed changes to the law, which will ensure all school buses are fitted with seatbelts has received backing from MSPs.
The bill – proposed by MSP Gillian Martin – will make it a legal requirement for seatbelts to be fitted on all dedicated home-to-school transport [routeone/News/3 August 2016].
It will now face further committee scrutiny, as calls have been made for it to be extended to buses used for school trips also.
Lib Dem MSP Mike Rumbles congratulated Ms Martin for bringing forward the bill saying, "it is a commendable aim,” adding he was "astonished" that this was not already a law.
It is currently up to local authorities to demand seatbelts on school buses.
Scotland has 17 local authorities that already stipulate seatbelts as a requirement in all dedicated school bus contracts.
