Alexander Dennis (ADL) and BYD UK have jointly disclosed plans to equip Sheffield with its first ever publicly-owned zero-emission buses.
Owned by and operating under the banner of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority will be four 10.2m BYD ADL Enviro200EV electric buses. ADL reveals they represent the first zero-emission buses in Sheffield and that their introduction signifies a step in advancing the city’s commitment to curbing emissions within its Clean Air Zone, an initiative introduced earlier this year.
The Enviro200EV buses will service the Sheffield Connect route. With a frequency of every 10 minutes, the service will facilitate access to trains, trams, and other bus services, fostering better connectivity across the city.
Martin Dunleavy, Regional Sales Manager at Alexander Dennis, says: “We’re really pleased to support the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority with its future vision to transform public transport. We look forward to playing our part in supporting South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard’s vision to transform the public transport network with the four publicly-owned zero-emission buses for the city of Sheffield.”
Adds Frank Thorpe, Managing Director at BYD UK: “BYD is delighted to support this eco-friendly initiative introducing publicly owned non-polluting electric buses to passengers in Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone. This is a superb example of ‘thinking outside the box’ to adopt electric bus transport.
“In partnership with ADL, in which BYD brings the world’s most advanced battery technology, we look forward to being part of this ongoing ‘electric bus journey’ in South Yorkshire.”
The introduction of the four vehicles has been supported in part by the UK government’s ZEBRA scheme.
