A Stagecoach East driver has been recognised with an award for his potentially life-saving actions for a member of the public who was suffering from a suspected heart attack.
Paul McCarthy, a driver at the Peterborough depot, won the Mick Capper Award, which is open to the operator’s drivers, engineers, presentation team and support staff throughout the region.
A trainee at the time, Paul and his mentor, Scott Gibson, were met with a man knocking at the bus door complaining of heart pain and then collapsing.
Paul used his first-aid experience to apply CPR when the man stopped breathing. After the emergency services arrived and took over, he continued his shift as normal.
The award is named after a driver and colleague who passed away due to COVID.
Darren Roe, Managing Director of Stagecoach East, says: “I am very proud of everything that Paul has been able to do in his relatively short time with us, and his quick thinking and calm and professional approach to this incident were genuinely heroic.
“One of our values is that we are ‘stronger together’ and this just goes to show the enthusiasm that our colleagues, across the region, have for providing the best possible service to local people in our communities.”
