Stagecoach has won the contract to provide the cycle shuttle bus across the Silvertown Tunnel in London, which is due to open in 2025.
The 1.4km tunnel from Silvertown to Greenwich will have a dedicated bus lane but, controversially, bicycles and pedestrians will not be permitted to cross due to safety reasons.
The modified single-decker battery-electric buses will transport cycles and their users across the new Thames crossing a reported five times per hour.
Paul Lynch, Managing Director for Stagecoach London, says: “It is fantastic that Stagecoach can help expand the ways the local community connect to what matters most to them.
“This new addition to our network will build on our ambitions for a thriving local bus network with sustainability at its core.”
The opening of the tunnel – planned for next spring – will enable the launch of the SL4 service and enable the completion of the new Superloop network around the capital.
