First Bus gained double honours at the 2018 National Transport Awards.
First Aberdeen driver Cameron Dyche won the Frontline Employee of the Year award while the First Bus Apprenticeship Programme, launched in May 2017, gained the Apprentice Champion Award.
Cameron received the award following his actions at a major incident last year when he was aged 19 and only a driver for two months.
He set off to help when another bus operator’s vehicle was drifting off the road towards a gas-mains next to a block of flats. The driver was slumped and motionless at the wheel.
Alerted by a frantic passenger, Cameron boarded the bus and began life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the driver until paramedics arrived.
“We were delighted to see awards presented to the people who put the safety of our customers front of mind, every single day. Cameron’s actions are an inspiration to us all,” says Matthew Gregory, FirstGroup’s Chief Financial Officer and interim Chief Operating Officer.
“It was also pleasing to see First Bus recognised as the industry’s champion of apprenticeships. Bringing new talent into the industry is how we will continue to provide the best service for our customers and apprenticeships are one of the best ways in which we can deliver this.”
