Blackpool Transport Services has appointed senior light rail executive Lea Harrison (pictured) as its new Managing Director.
He takes up the role from 1 March, succeeding Jane Cole, who retires after 12 years leading the municipally-owned operator.
Lea joins from Edinburgh Trams, where he has served as Managing Director for the past decade. His career in light rail spans more than three decades — he was one of the first tram drivers for Manchester Metrolink in 1991 before he moved into senior operational roles that included Head of Service Delivery at Tramlink Nottingham.
He subsequently moved to Edinburgh Trams. During his time there the business delivered an extension to the city’s tramway and introduced tap on, tap off contactless ticketing across bus and tram operations. The programme was associated with a 250% increase in patronage and a series of customer service awards at the Global Light Rail Awards and from the Institute of Customer Service.
Comments Cllr John Boughton, Chair of Blackpool Transport Services Board: “I’m delighted that somebody with Lea’s experience is so keen to come and work in Blackpool. He will bring a wealth of knowledge about well-connected public transport operators that puts customers first.
“I’d also like to place on record my immense thanks to Jane, who has spearheaded enormous change at Blackpool Transport Services over the last decade, and she will be missed.
Lea’s arrival in Blackpool comes at a time of transition for the operator. Under Jane’s leadership, Blackpool Transport Services has modernised its bus fleet and extended tram services. She was awarded an OBE in the 2026 New Year’s Honours List in recognition of services to transport.
