Various coach and bus industry members and stakeholders have contributed to the success of a Transaid Newcastle to Edinburgh cycle challenge that raised £60,000.

Backhouse Jones, Brigade Electronics, Iveco, RHA and operator Stanley Travel were each represented among participants in the challenge during mid-September. It saw 40 riders take two days to cover 159 miles between the two cities, across which time they battled the elements. Stanley Travel also provided coach transfers for the group.

The cross-border ride was quickly followed by another Transaid cycle challenge in Kenya, where £165,000 was raised and 295 miles covered over six days from the foothills of Mount Kenya to Lake Victoria.

The unrestricted funds generated across both exercises will be used to support Transaid’s lifesaving road safety and access to healthcare projects that currently span 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Speaking about the two events, Transaid Head of Fundraising Maddy Matheson says: “Ever since our first Cycle Challenge in Malawi back in 2006, we have enjoyed excellent support from riders across the industry, and this year was no different.

“We had two fantastic groups, each passionate about our lifesaving work. We are so grateful to everyone who participated, whether they were in the saddle or sponsoring a friend, family member or colleague.”

Transaid says that interest in future cycle challenges is welcome via email to Events Officer Anna Giavedoni.
