Eddie Brown, founder of what became one of the UK’s most respected coach operators in Eddie Brown Tours, has died. He was 96.

Mr Brown’s involvement in the industry was born from an interest in cars and all things mechanical. It began in 1949 with the purchase of a 20-seat Commer for £200, a move that delayed his and wife Gwen’s marriage for a year. The relationship saw them work together to develop the business, which was based in Helperby, between Thirsk and York.

A reputation was quickly developed for quality and first-rate customer service and Mr Brown became a familiar face in both his local community and the wider coach industry. He would often be seen driving and he also spent time in the garage maintaining his fleet.

Mr and Mrs Brown officially retired in the early 1990s, but Mr Brown maintained his interest in both the company and the industry. He would drive taxi feeders for door-to-door coach holidays and often said that one of the true joys of working in the coach industry was meeting his customers, many of whom were close friends. He also enjoyed travelling on the firm’s holidays, feeding back observations to the management team.

Mr Brown leaves his daughter Deirdre, who now runs the successful Deirdre Brown Travel coach holiday business; granddaughter Natalie; and great grandson Albie, whose middle name is Edwin, Mr Brown’s full first name.

Speaking about her father, Deirdre Brown says: “Dad was such a respected gentleman of the coach industry. He worked hard driving coaches by day and mending them by night. I always knew that he was home from his day driving for West Yorkshire Road Car as his coach, TRY 51S, had such a unique tone and I would run out to meet him for a hug.

“Latterly I had such happy times with dad on our own tours after mum died. He was my best friend and mentor. My own business, Deirdre Brown Travel, has succeeded thanks to my parents’ constant guidance.

“I have received so many comments: ‘A legend’, ‘what a guy’, ‘his smile will stay with me’, ‘a cracking bloke and always there to help others within the coach industry.” We will all miss him.”

Mr Brown’s funeral will take place at 1300hrs on Thursday 6 January 2022 at St Peter’s Church, Brafferton, Helperby, YO61 2NZ. Family flowers only have been requested.
