Ashcrofts Mini Travel of Leigh has introduced integrated artificial intelligence-powered dashcam solutions from Centrad.
The dual-camera system is mounted on the windscreen facing the driver in two Yutong GT12 coaches. It leverages AI to deliver event alerts as well as capture high-definition incident footage and track driver behaviour.
As part of that, AI is utilised to detect and identify unsafe actions such as failure to wear a seatbelt, drowsiness, mobile phone usage, and various forms of distracted driving. When those are identified, the system emits an audible safety alert.
Dashcams are equipped with 4G connectivity to enable real-time access to footage. With a live view feature, the operator can monitor activity remotely, and the download capability enables retrieval and saving of recordings when needed.
Footage can also be downloaded and used for training purposes. Centrad notes that reviewing real-world scenarios can help drivers to gain insights into potential risks and how to avoid them.
Use of the AI-powered dashcams by Ashcrofts follows the business signing a contract to work with FlixBus UK in 2024.
The operator began its partnership with Centrad two years ago when the supplier fitted eight HD camera systems across the coach fleet. Those are located to give comprehensive coverage of the vehicle for maximum safety and visibility inside and out.
Director Chris Ashcroft notes that he was initially hesitant about the collaboration because Ashcrofts Mini Travel had previously been let down by other suppliers, but those worries were quickly assuaged.
Mr Ashcroft acknowledges that AI-powered dashcams have “a lot of negative connotations,” particularly around privacy invasion.
But he believes that those units should be used to safeguard drivers’ welfare and provide them “with the necessary support to make them feel confident and secure when they are out on the road, not as a surveillance tool.” Rapid remote access is beneficial in that respect.
The Ashcrofts chief says that service levels and product quality from Centrad remain good. Response time is swift and the use of professional installers is commended. Mr Ashcroft notes that those staff members fit equipment to coaches with the utmost care.
“Unlike many of its counterparts in the camera and telematics industry, Centrad does not tie customers into frustrating and dauting long-term contracts but instead looks to deliver a high-quality, cost-effective service and range of products that are tailored to your operation and specific goals, rather than dictating what you need based on rigid packages.”
