Federal Mogul Powertrain has developed a process to rank the corrosion resistance of cylinder liner materials that will allow it to supply even more durable components for the most challenging applications.

The new test methodology enables development to be targeted at circumstances involving high levels of EGR, which poses significant challenges for the wear of ferrous cylinder bore surfaces.

Mechanical wear removes corrosion products to expose an unprotected surface, promoting further corrosion. The corroded surface also has inferior wear resistance, leading to a continuous cycle.
