Chinese e-bus manufacturer is focused on furthering ‘robust’ relationship with ADL

BYD has rubbished reports that it is in the process of purchasing Wrightbus, with BYD Europe MD Isbrand Ho saying that the Chinese electric bus manufacturer is focusing on developing its “very robust” relationship with Alexander Dennis (ADL).

Wrightbus recently announced that it was seeking a buyer or an investor. It is understood that Chinese engineering company Wechai is now in negotiations to purchase the Ballymena firm.

Mr Ho has confirmed that BYD had been approached by an agent acting on behalf of Wrightbus.

Speaking to routeone, he explained that BYD is instead working to expand the model range produced in cooperation with ADL, which bodies chassis produced by BYD. That relationship has already spawned the Enviro200EV single-decker and the Enviro400EV double-decker.

In a statement, a BYD representative says: “BYD has been made aware of the situation at Wrightbus. We respect William Wright for his achievements and contributions to society of the last several decades.

“BYD provides pure electric buses for the UK and it has established a strong relationship with ADL. We have also been working closely with the UK government in helping to fulfil its zero-emission ambitions, a process that started several years ago when Boris Johnson was the Mayor of London.

“BYD will continue to invest in the UK to bring in new technologies, jobs and partnerships. We also continue to monitor all opportunities there.”
