Up to 600 Enviro400ER for Eire as ADL seals deal

Alexander Dennis (ADL) has entered into a single supplier framework agreement with Ireland’s National Transport Authority (NTA) for the supply of up to 600 Enviro400ER ‘electric range’ hybrid double-deckers.

The Enviro400ER, which was first delivered to Brighton and Hove Buses in 2019, has a 32kW/h battery pack as part of the BAE Systems Series-ER hybrid package.

It allows an engine off range of up to 2.5km and permits the power unit to be stopped when approaching and leaving stops. Additionally, the NTA buses will have an external charging capability via a plug-in connection.

The framework agreement covers 100 firm orders for delivery later this year, and options for 500 additional buses. It was secured via a competitive procurement process. When announcing its plans for hybrids in 2019, NTA expected them to be “at least 30% more energy efficient” than diesels.

ADL will adapt its Enviro400 City bodywork to suit NTA’s requirements. That will include a more heavily raked lower windscreen.

The buses will be 11m long. The first 100 will seat 66 passengers and they will also have separate spaces for wheelchair users and buggies. The specification of later deliveries can be varied if and when they are taken up.

Says ADL Chief Executive Colin Robertson: “This order confirms our strategy of leading the market with the widest range of low- and zero-emission buses, enabling us to offer the right vehicle for each requirement.”
