Nottingham City Transport (NCT) Vehicle Inspector Mark Lawson has concluded an impressive 50-year tenure with the company, marking his journey into retirement.
Mark’s career, which began in 1973 as an Apprentice Fitter, makes him one of NCT’s longest-serving colleagues. His association with NCT is a continuation of a family legacy in the company that dates back to the 1920s. His commitment was evident from his early days, transitioning from an apprentice to a permanent Fitter at NCT’s former Bulwell Garage.
For nearly two decades, Mark held the role of Vehicle Inspector at NCT’s Parliament Street Garage, a position he assumed in February 2004 and maintained until his retirement in November this year. His career spanned various eras in the bus industry, including memorable experiences like working on the Silver Jubilee Bus in 1977 and an encounter with the Lord Mayor in 1999, acknowledging his contributions to NCT.
David Astill, Managing Director at NCT, lauds Mark’s tenure: “NCT has a tradition of long serving members of staff, but for Mark to have accumulated 50 years of continuous service is remarkable. On behalf of the whole team I thank him for his dedicated and loyal service and wish him well for the long and happy retirement that he has surely earned.”
Reflecting on his long-standing career, Mark expresses a deep sense of pride: “I’ve been proud working for NCT because I feel like I’ve achieved something through the job I’ve done. I’ll certainly miss working at NCT, where I’ve made a lot of friends over the years. Sometimes it’s not been so good getting up at 5:30 in the morning on a cold, frosty February, but on the whole, I’ve really enjoyed it. I wouldn’t have been here 50 years otherwise!”
