National Express Group (NEG) has sold its c2c franchise in Essex to the Italian state railway for a “small net profit.”
While NEG doesn’t rule out bidding in the future, it is concentrating on Europe and the USA. At one stage NEG held nine UK franchises, however it lost them at re-tender.
When it won the debut seven-year ScotRail franchise in 1997, the Competition Commission forced it to sell its Scottish Citylink coach operation, which it had bought in 1993. It lost the franchise on re-tender to First.
