Coach and bus driver resource availability

The issue of driver shortages is one of the biggest headaches for coach and bus operators. Not only might the challenge of recruiting enough drivers be preventing them meeting existing commitments but it is holding back some from expanding their profitability via new opportunities.

That is why routeone has partnered with leading coach and bus driver recruitment specialists C9 Recruitment to offer an exclusive discount on its services using the code “routeone10”. The trusted company has built up an excellent reputation for its consultancy-led approach and has worked with National Express, First Bus, Metroline, Abellio, Premium Coaches, Big Bus Tours, Maynes Coaches, Hearn’s Coaches and Redwing Coaches, among many others.

C9 Recruitment Chief Executive Officer Sam Wharfe says: “Partnering with routeone as the leading trade magazine for the coach and bus industry was a no-brainer. The opportunity to reach routeone’s wide and prominent audience in the sector means we are able to help even more operators find new staff, which can be the key to unlocking more business. It makes a strong relationship even stronger.”

Daniel Lunn, routeone Sales Manager, adds: “The relationship between routeone and C9 has gone from strength to strength over the past few months. Partnering with C9 to help improve the driver shortage crisis was a no-brainer. C9’s willingness to collaborate and proritise operators’ needs is refreshing and sits well with our business and values.

“I urge all operators to give C9 Recruitment a call and to use the discount code ‘routeone10’ to ensure you’re getting a fantastic deal.”

C9 Recruitment prides itself on operating differently to other agencies and working closely with operators to identify their exact needs. Sam says: “People have been stung so many times in the past by agencies, they just assume we are the same. People are seeing that we are not like the others and we work very differently. We are here to help to make you money. We want to be the agency that people want to work with more than need to work with.”

With a team that includes recruiters with a wealth of experience in the industry, C9 Recruitment uses the latest technology such as Applicant Tracking Systems and bespoke artificial intelligence tools to cut down on wasted time and ensure the right drivers are found for the job.

Masons Minibus and Coach Hire of Hertfordshire is among the many operators to have benefited from C9 Recruitment‘s services, having been rescued from a major staffing issue.

Its Director of Business Operations, Candice Mason, says: “C9 first called me just when I needed them most! It was following a disastrous start to our summer season when I had three drivers go on long-term sick leave in the same week. They quickly became familiar with the type of driver we required and how our organisation like to work with agencies.

“They were able to send over potential driver details within the same day and I was able to contact and interview them myself to make sure they would be a good fit. C9 have been on email and WhatsApp throughout the driver’s time with me and have kept up good communication.

“They have conducted themselves in the highest professional standards when we experience an issue. It was clear to me that they were keen to form lasting working relationships with myself as an operator and I felt really valued as a client of theirs. I wouldn’t hesitate to use C9 again. In fact, they are now my go-to agency!”

andy burnham tfgm £15.6 billion (1) The funding announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves today (4 June) has been allocated to several combined mayoral authorities to use on rail, tram, road and bus infrastructure. Transport for Greater Manchester revealed today that part of the £2.5 billion it will receive will go towards making the Bee Network fully battery-electric by 2030. An as-yet undecided portion of that will support a planned investment in 1,000 new zero-emission buses over that period, the mayoral authority said. That is part of plans to build the UK's "first fully integrated, zero-emission public transport system", with trams and trains also set to benefit. Liverpool City Region's already announced BRT system is among the projects to which its £1.6 billion will be allocated. Under those plans - due for realisation by 2028 - a high-speed network will be served by articulated buses which are modelled on the 'Glider' in Belfast. It is due to link Liverpool city centre with John Lennon Airport, and Liverpool FC and Everton FC's respective stadia along three routes. Although the model of bus has not been confirmed, a Van Hool Exqui.City on loan from Belfast was last year used as a demonstrator. That 18m vehicle can accommodate around 30% more passengers than a typical bus and has three sets of double doors. The funding will also go towards buses elsewhere in the city as the region heads towards franchising services by 2027. Liverpool Mayor Steve Rotheram with a 'Glider' which was on loan from Belfast last year - an example of the sort of bus which could serve the new BRT Bus services in the East Midlands region will be boosted by the funding, thanks to the £2 billion handed to it today by the government. Some of that allocation will be used for a rapid transit network on the Trent Arc between Nottingham and Derby. Between the two cities, the Freeport, Infinity Park Investment Zone and Ratcliffe-on-Soar will also benefit from the improved bus services. South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority's newly announced commitment towards bus franchising has been boosted by £350 million in funding as part of that region's allocation. The funding for West Yorkshire will help build new bus stations in Bradford and Wakefield. Likewise, the Tees Valley Mayoral Authority will put its sum towards a new £15 million bus station in Middlesbrough. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander says: "Today marks a watershed moment on our journey to improving transport across the North and Midlands – opening up access to jobs, growing the economy and driving up quality of life as we deliver our Plan for Change. "For too long, people in the North and Midlands have been locked out of the investment they deserve. With £15.6bn of government investment, we’re giving local leaders the means to drive cities, towns and communities forward, investing in Britain’s renewal so you and your family are better off."
