CTO steps in to continue the East Staffs Mobility Link route after funding concerns lead to Burton operator closing doors; follows decision to save Moorlands Connect minibus service in late 2017

Ashbourne Community Transport stepped in to help Burton residents

Ashbourne Community Transport (ACT) has again stepped in to save a socially-necessary service after it took on a route formerly operated by East Staffs Mobility Link (ESML), the Burton Mail has reported.

Burton-upon-Trent-based ESML closed on 30 April after withdrawal of funding and proposed changes to the use of permits. At the time, it stated that the need for drivers to undertake Driver CPC training was an expense that it could not bear.

That move left many of its 1,000 passengers without transport until ACT, which has a base in Swadlincote, took on the service. ACT is already seeing a large demand from other groups and organisations in Burton and it is working with a number of them to provide transport.

ACT says that it has attempted to retain as many elements of the ESML service as possible to maintain passenger confidence.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees Pat Laughlin told the Burton Mail that the service is currently carrying up to 12 passengers per day. Users register and pre-book journeys within a 15-mile radius of the town.

Earlier this year, ACT reached an agreement with Staffordshire County Council to take on the Moorlands Connect minibus service that had been threatened with closure after ACT was able to secure third-party funding.
