Transport for London’s Bus Safety Standard has “gone down very well” with the industry, says Jane Lupson, its Senior Bus Safety Development Manager.

She describes the standard, which was unveiled last month, as “definitely the most important and the biggest” of the organisation’s workstreams on safety.

The measures included in the first phase of the Bus Safety Standard will be written by TfL into its London bus service contracts by the end of this year and are thought to be introduced into new buses towards the end of 2019.

“We still have further developments to do on some of the measures,” says Ms Lupson.

Claire Mann, TfL’s Director of Bus Operations, described the Bus Safety Standard as a “huge impactful scheme” when she outlined it to a Euro Bus Expo audience.

During her presentation, she announced that a Bus Safety Innovation Challenge is to be launched by Transport for London early next year. This will seek evidence-backed ideas to improve bus safety.
