National Express has successfully retained its contract to run shuttle bus services at London Stansted airport.

It has secured a new five-year agreement, with the option of a further three years, in a competitive tender process managed by Stansted’s owner Manchester Airports Group.

National Express has held the contract since 2008.

The bid included a commitment to a brand-new fleet of Mercedes-Benz Citaros, state-of-the-art passenger amenities and significant investment in vehicle technology, including real-time passenger information.

National Express says part of its business strategy is to develop its presence at airports across the UK.

The contract also ensures the continued employment of the current 100-plus staff.

Chris Hardy, National Express UK Coach Managing Director, says: “This is a prestigious contract that attracted strong competition, so we are hugely excited to be continuing to work with London Stansted Airport.

“Our bid built on the fact that we have been operating these services since 2008 but we definitely weren’t complacent in our approach. We are confident that our improved offering will deliver a more responsive service with high quality vehicles operating faster journey times.”

Steve Mills, Surface Access Manager, London Stansted Airport said “For many people, the bus between the car park and terminal is their first and last impression of the airport, so it’s vital they get the best possible service. That is why we’re delighted to be continuing our successful partnership with National Express.

“The introduction of a new fleet of vehicles and new technology will not only deliver a step-change in the customer experience, but play an important role in keeping our emissions low and maintaining London Stansted’s status as a carbon neutral airport.”
