Richard Turfitt has been named Acting Traffic Commissioner (TC) for Scotland on a temporary basis pending the appointment of a permanent holder of that post.
He has been serving as a Deputy TC in Scotland for some time after the departure of previous full-time TC for that traffic area Claire Gilmore during 2024.
Mr Turfitt continues as TC for the East of England and Senior Traffic Commissioner, although he will step down from the latter role soon and be succeeded there by TC for the West of England Kevin Rooney.
A recruitment campaign for the TC for Scotland role is currently underway. Mr Turfitt’s formal appointment as Acting TC “ensures that Scotland is supported by a dedicated Traffic Commissioner for devolved matters,” the Department for Transport says.
In addition to matters around the regulation of the passenger and freight industries, the TC for Scotland is also responsible for taxi fare scale appeals, something that is not applicable to other traffic areas.
