Traffic Commissioner for Scotland Claire Gilmore (pictured, above) and Traffic Commissioner for North West England Gerallt Evans (pictured, below) will each leave their posts in the first half of 2024.
Ms Gilmore will depart in May to pursue new challenges. She took up responsibilities as a Traffic Commissioner in 2019 and succeeded Joan Aitken in Scotland. Prior to assuming the road transport regulatory role, Ms Gilmore was with the office of the Commissioner for Ethical Standards in Public Life in Scotland.
Meanwhile, Mr Evans will retire on 31 January after four years as a Traffic Commissioner. Prior to his appointment in 2020, he was Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor with responsibility for all prosecutions in Magistrates Courts in Wales.
Mr Evans will continue in the role of Deputy Traffic Commissioner after his retirement. Recruitment for his successor as Traffic Commissioner has already commenced, with a deadline for applications of 5 February.
Speaking about the pending changes, Senior Traffic Commissioner Richard Turfitt says: “I would like to publicly record my thanks to Gerallt and Claire for their contribution to road safety in Great Britain and their successes of the last four and five years, respectively.
“It has been a challenging period, continuing to serve the public while meeting challenges like the pandemic and driver shortages. Their work has strengthened the Traffic Commissioner tribunal.
“In addition to the hours spent on cases, education, and encouraging road transport businesses, they have led on improvements in our data governance and quality assurance.
“I therefore wish Claire every success in the future, and I am grateful that Gerallt has decided to use his skills as a Deputy Traffic Commissioner.”
Separately, Kenneth Young has been appointed as a Deputy Traffic Commissioner. He is an advocate with practice encompassing commercial litigation, administrative law and Public Inquiries, and he will be based in Scotland.
Mr Turfitt notes that Mr Young “will provide valuable support to the full-time Commissioners as we face fresh challenges in workload and continue our modernisation plans.”
