Walk on the wild side in Dinosaurs in the Wild, Birmingham’s latest attraction

Opened in June, Dinosaurs in the Wild is an interactive experience at the NEC in Birmingham.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the time of the dinosaurs, as they are transported back 67 million years.

For five years, a team of more than 100 specialists and palaeontologists have worked on the £12m production, and groups of all ages, children and adults, will enjoy this attraction which is packed full of interesting scientific facts and items to see.

One of the producers of the attraction, Jill Bryant, says: “What we say when there is a group of adults is this: Allow your inner eight-year-old to come out.”

Upon arrival at the ‘Chronotex facility’, ‘time travellers’ are given a pair of glasses. To the outside world they are 3D glasses, but for those about to begin the adventure, they’re ‘radiation glasses’ which must be worn unless stated otherwise.

A cartoon safety video is then played “because time travel can be dangerous” and visitors are reminded that “if you can see a dinosaur, it’s already seen you.”

Once on board the time machine, also known as X90 transfer pods, the lights start flashing, noises start ringing and then you arrive. Visuals appear in the front screen to give the illusion that you are now driving on the land, passing a variety of dinosaurs.

The vehicle arrives at the research station TimeBase 67, an introductory video is played before moving on to the pathology lab.

In this section, there is plenty to see and do. One of the main features is the heart of an Alamosaurus, before moving on to see the forearm of a T-Rex and also touch dinosaur poo.

Other highlights include: An autopsy on a Pachycephalosaurus, watching a Triceratops hatch, and meeting a new-born Dakotaraptor.

Just before you return to the present it’s on to the lookout, where visitors can see something exciting happening in each of the four windows.

The attraction lasts approximately 70 minutes and is at NEC Birmingham until 23 August, it will then be at EventCity, Manchester from 7 October – 7 January 2018.
