Go North East (GNE) has invested £4.5m into improving its Consett fleet in north-west County Durham.

The X70 and X71 routes to Gateshead and Newcastle are the latest to join GNE’s premium X-lines brand. Brand new, low-emission buses in a gold and green colour scheme will run the routes. They come equipped with wi-fi, USB and wireless charging, next-stop audio-visual announcements and tables on the upper decks. The buses also come with bike racks on board for integration of active travel and can each carry two bikes.

Upgraded and new buses have also been introduced on the X45, X46 and X47 routes between Consett and Newcastle.

Go North East’s Managing Director, Martijn Gilbert, says: “I’m delighted to see these buses starting to enter service.

“A lot has changed since we ordered these buses, but we hope this major investment in brand new, low-emission, luxury buses will help transform bus travel in Consett and support the region’s recovery from lockdown in a congestion busting and low carbon way.”

Last year, GNE invested £3.5m into a new depot in the town.
