Nottingham City Transport (NCT) has named one of its new low-emission bio-gas double-deck buses after Betty Higgins, the first female Leader of Nottingham City Council, who passed away earlier this year.
Elected as a City Councillor in 1971, Ms Higgins became the first female Leader of Nottingham City Council in 1983 until 1987 and then again between 1991 and 1993.
While many other towns and cities sold off their bus companies, Ms Higgins had the foresight to keep NCT in public ownership, being one of only a handful of council-owned bus companies left in the country.
Cllr David Mellen, Nottingham City Council Leader, says: “At a time when the rest of the country were selling municipal bus companies Betty had the strength and determination to keep NCT publicly owned. A legacy which has had a lasting impact.”
