I read the article in routeone about getting the right driver for the job [routeone/Training/26 September.
I’m a driver and help out at a few companies, but I have to say that the driver shortage is down to the company.
I’ve held my licence for seven years and only driven services or coach work a few times.
I have child care issues but always happy to start at 1000hrs and drive until late. I decided to try for a more permanent job, with a few big operators that are "stuck for drivers".
I went for interviews and the likes and discussed my needs. Out of four companies, all big in the grand scheme of things, I had no offers. One company was desperate for drivers so I rang up and made it clear I can work most days from 1000hrs, they said no.
I worked for an independent that is now also desperate, but made my hours and shifts not workable resulting in me having to leave the post. I would travel for at least one hour to help the company out but they all seem short-sited. I went back to driving half cab vintage buses for weddings and proms.
I think this issue of “getting the right drivers” is down to the operators – not the drivers.
Once I drop my child off at work, I’m willing to work. So, I’m well and truly stuck and see all over driver shortage. Well, I’m one of around 15 I know saying the same thing.
