Rafael Fernandez de la Pena (pictured) has been appointed Managing Director of National Express UK Coach. He succeeds Javier Martinez Prieto, who will shortly leave the business after nine months for personal reasons.
Mr Fernandez de la Pena has extensive experience at the sister Mobico Group business Alsa Group, which is based in Spain. He has led major projects in several senior roles, including as Director of the Southern Zone at Alsa Morocco, and Business Development Director of the Diversification Division.
Mr Martinez Prieto joined National Express UK Coach in September 2025 at the time that the operator revealed how it and Alsa would come together at the start of 2026 to create “a pan-European coach powerhouse.” Such integration combines market expertise and unlocks strategic efficiencies, the business said at the time.
Like Mr Fernandez de la Pena, Mr Martinez Prieto has long experience with Alsa, having joined over 30 years ago. During his time with National Express UK Coach he has led a programme of transformation that “has helped to strengthen the business and position it for future success,” National Express notes in a statement.
Mobico Group CEO Paco Iglesias has thanked Mr Martinez Prieto for his service. “While we are sorry to see Javier leave, we fully understand and respect his decision. He leaves with our sincere thanks for his commitment, leadership and contribution, and with our very best wishes for the future.”
Speaking about his appointment, Mr Fernandez de la Pena says: “I am honoured to take on this role and lead the UK Coach business through its next chapter.
“National Express is a highly respected brand with a strong team, loyal customers, and significant opportunities ahead. I look forward to building on the strong foundations already in place to continue delivering excellent service for our customers and drive sustainable growth for the future.”
