The Isle of Wight is the latest destination to be awarded Coach Friendly status by the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT).
It has gained that recognition thanks to what CPT says are “great facilities and [a] positive welcome to coach travellers.” The award was presented to Visit Isle of Wight Chief Executive Dominic Wray on 17 June at Osborne House, the former royal residence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in East Cowes.
Says Mr Wray: “Coach tourism is key for the island’s visitor economy, filling hotel beds and attractions during otherwise quieter periods.
“Visit Isle of Wight continues to produce the Group Friendly Travel Guide, highlighting facilities like coach parking areas, coach friendly attractions, activities and hotels, and gives example itineraries for tour operators.
“This accreditation is a huge recognition for all our hard-working tourism businesses and the work they do to support the coach tourism industry.”
Award of Coach Friendly accreditation to the Isle of Wight comes during Better Transport Week, where CPT is majoring on the contribution made by coach to sustainable travel. It was made on the eve of the Isle of Wight Festival, which brings more than 50,000 people to the island.
Achieving the status is based on a destination having a significant tourism offer and demonstrating a commitment to increasing traffic from coach operators and visitors.
Among requirements are good pick-up and drop-off points, facilities for coach drivers, clear directional instructions, consideration for mobility impaired travellers, and a named representative on hand to deal with any problems. The Isle of Wight follows Market Drayton and Teesside Park in gaining Coach Friendly accreditation of late.
Speaking about the latest award, CPT Coaching Manager Andy Shaw says: “With its stunning coastal scenery, fascinating heritage and laid-back vibe, the Isle of Wight is an enduring popular destination for coach tourism.
“Coach operators and passengers get a warm welcome on the island, and can be confident of great facilities at top visitor attractions. We are delighted to add the Isle of Wight to our list of coach friendly destinations.”
